Cover shoot: Katy Mixon x Good Housekeeping

/ June 4, 2018

I’ve been meaning to get this blog post up for a wee while (since March, oops!). Katy Mixon is the lead actress in ABC’s hit television sitcom American Housewife. She has also starred alongside Vice Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon in one of my favorite Christmas movies, Four Christmases. If you haven’t seen it before, I highly recommend that you set aside some time to watch it.

Katy was such a southern belle on set with the bubbliest personality. She was so polite and kind to everyone and very open to my photo direction. This was my first cover shoot for Good Housekeeping, and such an incredible experience. The team from Good Housekeeping was equally amazing to work with. I was so surprised when I learned that the creative director at Good Housekeeping, who I was working side by side with, was also a Canadian girl like myself.

We photographed these photos at Lightlab Studios in Los Angeles. The space is so nice and airy, so it worked perfectly for this shoot.

It was really exciting picking up Good Housekeeping on newsstands! I may have bought 1, or 2! Okay, okay I bought like 8 copies and gave them away because I was so excited, haha! Thanks so much to my amazing production team (friends!): Byron, Johnny, and Meredith, for helping me bring this shoot to life! Such an All-Star team always!!

Also, the images from the shoot were showcased in full window displays outside the Hearst headquarters, in New York City! I so wish I could have seen this in person. Thanks so much to Melissa for sending these iPhone snaps to me.

and happy Monday, you guys!

Nate Berkus & Jeremiah Brent for Angeleno Magazine

/ May 31, 2018

Being asked by Modern Luxury to photograph interior designers, and power couple, Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent was incredibly exciting! I’ve been a huge admirer of Nate’s work ever since he was a regular guest on the Oprah Winfrey show. Last year I photographed Deepak Chopra and now Nate Berkus. I promise you, I can almost hear Oprah calling my name. This is what I like to call the 6th degree of Oprah Winfrey, haha!

We shot this feature on location at JF Chen, which was the perfect space to photograph these two. JF Chen has a vast, industrial-cool antiques showroom in Hollywood, which features big-name mid-century furniture, accessories, and art.  Nate uses pieces from the JF Chen showroom expertly in some of his designs. Nate and Jeremiah were so charming, handsome, and down to earth. This made them so easy to work with and on top of this, both of them carried such fun energy into the shoot! You can tell from their portraits that they genuinely love what they do – and each other! Everything goes so smoothly when people feed off of each other and share this dynamic during a shoot.

These two are super busy, creating season two of their show Nate and Jeremiah by Design, on TLC. Make sure you keep an eye out to see these guys in action and hopefully we get to work together again soon!

Christina El Moussa for ELLE Decor

/ February 26, 2018

Shooting for ELLE Decor is always so exciting! I’ve been lucky enough to work with them since the very start of my photography career. This time, photographing HGTV’s Christina El Moussa in her Orange County home. Being on camera all the time, I imagined Christina would have needed little direction from me (she’s so stunning!) but she didn’t realize how truly photogenic she was! She opened herself up to my direction which made for such a collaborative experience. Christina’s home in Yorba Linda, OC had a beautifully clean design that focused on neutral tones. While black, white, and gray are the main players in her color palette, she adds lots of sparkle and sparkly elements in the mix (which I obviously loved!) that made for a fun contrast in the shoot. As much as I LOVE reality television, I surprisingly had never seen Christina’s show Flip or Flop. Funny enough, the crew from Entertainment Tonight stopped by our shoot to interview Christina while I took her portraits and the back of my head and body made it to the show! Check out the clip here and see if you can spot me;) I’ll definitely have to check out Flip or Flop now!

cover shoot: thoughtfully magazine

/ February 5, 2018

I’ve been meaning to share these photos for so long. Especially since we’re just about to start production on the Spring ’18 cover shoot. I love working with the team over at Thoughtfully Magazine, this time shooting their spring/summer ’17  issue featuring the super talented Rawcells founder, Natasha James (side note: the Fall issue that I also photographed is currently available to purchase at Anthropologie). Rawcells is a local, organic vegan treat brand. We decided to take Natasha and her goodies to an L.A. favorite –  the polka dot wall created by The Most Famous Artist and located at The Springs, a plant-based kitchen & juice bar in Downtown Los Angeles. It was so fun working with Natasha, as well as the entire team at Thoughtfully – creative director/founder Brandie Gilliam, wardrobe stylist Alexis Montalvo, hair stylist LaChanda Gatson, makeup artist Gina Caraballo, with assistance by Katheryn Parrish. This girl squad is definitely one of the best!!

Blurb

/ December 15, 2017

8 years ago, I moved to Los Angeles from Ottawa Canada with a big crazy dream. Deep down, I only thought I’d be here for 3 years (max!) so it blows my mind to think 8 years later, we are still making memories in the city of angels. I was 7 years old the first time I told my parents “I’m moving to Hollywood” (probably around the same time I picked up my first camera)! 18 years later, along with my best friend & the absolute love of my life, we packed our entire lives in a ’94 Dodge Spirit and drove over 5,000 miles to our new home with no job, no apartment, no plan really… We didn’t even know where in LA we should live that first year. It was just a big crazy dream I had of living a creative life where the sun shines almost every day of the year and where the palm trees are a constant reminder of all those wild dreams I had as a young girl in Ottawa. The palms will forever remind me of why I moved to California in the first place.

Maybe one day I’ll tell you guys all about the struggles and hard work that went into creating my own business and building a kick ass clientele and my visa process that has allowed me to stay in the US, but for now, I’ll spare you all the boring details because I’m super proud to say working as a full time freelance advertising photographer has been the best thing to ever happen to me (next to Andre and Dolly, of course!). I’ve been so fortunate to work with some of the best clients in the commercial world and none of which would’ve been possible without that crazy dream and those 5,000 miles we drove across the country, so when Blurb recently asked me to create and sell my own book, it only felt natural that photography had to be the guiding focus behind this book.

I actually ended up creating two books. One that I can use to showcase my work as a printed portfolio, and I’ll be able to keep this portfolio handy for when I meet potential clients for meetings and interviews. The second Blurb book is entirely inspired by my love of Palm Springs. And since Blurb makes it easy to sell your own self-published book, I have listed it for sale in the Blurb Bookstore! Also, if Palm Springs isn’t your thing there are a lot of other great gift ideas on Blurb’s Gift page for everyone of all ages.

As a photographer, it’s so important to showcase your work. Whether it’s your online portfolio, social media, or mailers; showcasing your work really matters. I’ve always had a portfolio in hand when I met with potential clients, but now, thanks to Blurb, I was able to condense my oversized printed portfolio book into something a lot more compact, clean looking, and to fit in my bag for meetings! Blurb provides creators so many options when it comes to designing your own book from a variety of papers (you can even order a swatch kit to see the papers in person), different formats and sizes, and cover options such as image wrap, dust jackets, etc. It really doesn’t matter who you are and what you do, if you’re looking to self-publish your first book, or create something a lot more personal for the holidays as a gift – Blurb makes it easy to create the book that works best for you!

For me, my new portfolio book needed to look simple and elegant. I wanted the colors to pop like they do with my online portfolio. I decided to go with the hardcover option, and I used Blurb’s new Layflat paper option, which allowed me to create gorgeous, unbroken images, spread across two pages – perfect for horizontal images!! The paper is quite thick which gives it that fine art feel when your fingers turn the page.

The entire process of building this book was quite simple because Blurb has an extensive selection of creation tools and plug-ins built directly into their site. And for those of you comfortable with Lightroom and In-Design, you can download their plug-ins and get to work right away. For those of you not so comfortable with these programs, Blurb also has their own software called BookWright, which easily downloads directly to your computer. Picking BookWright made building my book effortless; however, picking the right photos to showcase in my book… uhhh, not so easy, haha!

Once I was done creating my book and felt it looked good and cohesive, it only took me a few clicks before a message popped up that my book was already on its way to MEEE!! And as soon as I cracked open the package, I could not have been happier with the way the booked turned out! The photos looked so clean and crisp and the colors truly popped the way they do with my online portfolio. I’m so beyond thrilled with the professional quality of these books. And I will definitely be taking this book with me to all my upcoming client meetings!

This post was sponsored by Blurb Books, but all opinions are my own.

Tiffani Thiessen for Mini Magazine

/ October 25, 2017

It’s sure been hectic over here. We’ve been shooting back to back for a couple weeks now, and I haven’t had a minute to share new work with you guys, so I’m excited to finally share my second shoot for Mini Magazine! This time shooting 90’s Queeeen Tiffani Thiessen (from Saved By The Bell & Beverly Hills 90210) for the spring cover.  It was such a treat to spend time at-home with Tiffani.  She made our team feel right at home from the moment we stepped into her stunning historic home, and since I was up super early this morning prepping for the next Mini Magazine cover shoot, I figured I should probably share this feature I photographed many months ago. Have an awesome day, you guys!
